Fathering in America

Key findings:

When compared with responses from 10 years ago, American adults (men and wormen) believe that significant progress has been made on a number of fronts related to fathers and fathering:

  • 19% more believe dads are eating one or more meals with their family each day.
  • 13% more believe that employers recognize the strain fathers face between the demands of family and the demands of work.
  • 10% more believe most fathers feel comfortable discussing spiritual issues with their children.

The study also found that several significant issues remain for American fathers:

  • 97% of respondents believe that fathers need to be more involved in their children’s education.
  • Half believe that most fathers do not know what is going on in their child’s lives.

Expanding Across the Region

Urban Light Ministries, Inc. has been providing quality services and training to men and fathers in Clark County since 2006 through the Nurturing Fathers for Life (NFL) project. The innovative spirit of ULMI in targeting this often overlooked but critically important area of need has come to the attention of the state.

ULMI was recently selected to receive one of only 10 grants awarded across the state by the Ohio Commission on Fatherhood. ULMI will act as the lead agency for a coalition of faith-based and community organization that form the Miami Valley Partnership for Fathers initiative. The initiative will cover a nine county area and serve populations as diverse as incarcerated men, Latino men, expectant fathers, fathers from the general community, as well as teenagers at risk of becoming premature fathers.

Along with ULMI, this initiative will be carried out by Family and Youth Initiative, Springfield Christian Youth Ministry, and PowerNet of Dayton. The programs that are being implemented across the region by ULMI and its partners will help fathers develop stronger and healthier bonds with their children. By becoming more responsible caregivers, the fathers and their children will create positive memories that will impact the vitality of our region’s youth, children, and even the generations to come.
